Achelse Kluis bruin

Achelse Kluis Bruin is een trappistenbier uit abdij De Achelse Kluis in Hamont-Achel. In de jaren negentig verloor La Trappe haar licentie, waardoor slechts vijf abdijen nog trappistenbier brouwden. Westmalle, de grootste, hielp de abdij nieuw leven in te blazen.  

Opgericht in 1851, verbouwde de abdij haar eigen gewassen en begon in 1859 met bier, kaas en brood. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd de abdij zwaar beschadigd en haar koperen ketels omgesmolten tot munitie. Door de Nederlandse achtergrond werd schadevergoeding geweigerd. In 1997 stelde Westmalle fondsen en personeel beschikbaar voor een nieuwe brouwerij.  

Het eerste bier, Achel 5, verscheen in 1998 als een lichte ale voor bezoekers, maar werd matig ontvangen. Daarna volgden Achel 7 en Achel 6, die betere reacties kregen. In 2001 werd Achel 8 positief ontvangen. Vandaag brouwt de abdij zes bieren, waaronder Achel Extra Blond en Extra Bruin (9,5%).  

Achelse Kluis Bruin is a Trappist beer from the abbey De Achelse Kluis in Hamont-Achel. In the 1990s, La Trappe lost its license, leaving only five Trappist breweries. Westmalle, the largest, helped revive the abbey.

Founded in 1851, the abbey cultivated crops and started brewing in 1859. It suffered severe damage in World War I, with its copper kettles confiscated for ammunition. Due to its Dutch ties, post-war compensation was denied. In 1997, Westmalle provided funds and staff for a new brewery.

The first beer, Achel 5, launched in 1998 as a light ale for visitors but received mixed reviews. Achel 7 followed, also met with criticism. Achel 6, a blend, showed promise, and in 2001, Achel 8 was well received. Today, the brewery produces six beers, including Achel 5 and Achel 8, alongside strong variations like Achel Extra Blond and Achel Extra Bruin (9.5%).
